How Dell helps customers channel AI solutions from proof of concept to production
BY MARK ALBERTSON
As enterprises pursue business solutions through artificial intelligence, there are often roadblocks along the way. Dell Technologies is positioning itself as a resource for organizations to put new AI solutions into production.
Customers have business challenges that get transformed into data science problems, and that’s where the hard work often begins.
“That data science problem gets to the data science solution, and then it needs to be mapped to production deployment as a business solution,” said Chhandomay Mandal (pictured, right), director of solutions marketing at Dell EMC storage and data protection at Dell Technologies. “What happens a lot of the time is companies do not plan for how to transition from the proof of concept that data scientists are playing with, like a smaller set of data, to when it goes to large production deployment. That’s where we come in.”
Mandal spoke with Lisa Martin, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during the Dell Technologies World Digital Experience event. He was joined by Thomas Henson (pictured, left), global business development manager of AI/analytics at Dell EMC, and they discussed Dell’s work to illuminate AI architecture for businesses and the role of PowerScale in managing cross-platform data. Navigating the last mile
Dell has taken steps in 2020 to strengthen its capabilities for moving customers along on the AI journey. Earlier this year, the company introduced new high-performance computing and analytics tools, including Dell EMC Ready Solutions, to accelerate the path to AI. In June, Dell extended that to include VMware environments as well.
“We call it that last mile,” Henson said. “I’ve got a great proof of concept; how do I get it into production? We help our customers by partnering with them to show how to build from an IT and infrastructure perspective and what that AI architecture looks like.”
One of the key elements in Dell’s AI strategy is PowerScale, which can manage data across multiple platforms.
“How we help customers is you can have all of your data in a managed cloud service provider running on PowerScale, but then you can connect from this managed cloud service provider directly to any of the hyperscalers,” Mandal said. “As it is growing from proof of concept to large-scale production, data can stay in place with the PowerScale platform.”
