The art of innovating data: Author Walter Isaacson on today’s tech trends
From transistor radios to iPods, there are many devices that existed only in the imagination before being introduced to the market.
Walter Isaacson (pictured) is an American writer and journalist chronicling the digital transformation in society and how it impacts human interaction in his book “The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution.” He is a former executive at CNN and Time, and is known for his acclaimed book “Steve Jobs” published in 2011.
Issacson spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu), co-host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at the Dell Technologies World event in Las Vegas. They discussed the author’s books on technocrats and innovators.
Reaching the ‘inflection’ point
Issacson’s novel is about the journey in technology — how to navigate change in the industry and how innovators find success in collaboration.
“Things happen sometimes slower than you expect, until that inflection point when they happen faster than you expect,” he said. “I think the main thing to do is to be one of those people that has an intuitive feel for how humans are going to find a product or service to be transformative to them.”
The famed author has had the chance to study and write about several brilliant minds spanning time and geography, drawing inspiration from innovators such as Steve Jobs, Leonardo da Vinci and Ada Lovelace, all of whom stand at the intersection of humanities and science, according to Isaacson.
“That’s so important in today’s world,” he said. “We can have enormous amounts of data, and the question is, how do you connect humans to it? How do you add the human factor?”
Michael Dell may be on the list of innovators and collaborators, too, as Isaacson pointed out the familial influences underlying Dell’s success. His parents prioritized education and were deeply humane. “And that’s why there’s a humanity I see that Michael Dell is able to embed in his products,” Isaacson concluded.
