Dell EMC leads HCI market: How did it happen?
Dell EMC recently announced that it is the number one market leader in hyperconverged infrastructure. So how did it happen? Gil Shneorson (pictured), senior vice president and general manager of VxRail at Dell EMC, helped bring insight into Dell EMC’s market growth.
“We found a way to take a systems approach to what is otherwise a software-defined world,” Shneorson said. “So we found a way to get all of the economical benefits of hyperconverged driven by software — at the same time own the responsibility for those systems to be up and running and life cycle managed. … I think that recipe has lead us to a leadership position very, very quickly.”
Shneorson spoke with Lisa Martin (@LuccaZara), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor), principal at The CTO Advisor, at the Dell Technologies World event in Las Vegas. They discussed Dell EMC’s HCI innovations and what customers want. (* Disclosure below.)
Shared responsibility for HCI
What is most important to customers as they embrace HCI through Dell EMC’s innovations? “When customers choose to deploy software-defined solutions on their own, they’re doing something that they haven’t been doing in many, many years — which is take on the responsibility for up-timing,” Shneorson said.
What Dell EMC has done, with services like VxRail or VxRack, is find a balance where they take on a huge load of the responsibility from the operations standpoint. “That combination is very, very important,” Shneorson added.
As companies toy with the idea of HCI, there is no reason to rush it, according to Shneorson. The market is growing 60 to 70 percent, but there’s a long way to go, he explained.
“There’s work to do, but the economical benefits are so strong that customers are making the choice more and more and more. And they trust us to know how to close the gaps that we still have,” Shneorson said. “It’s a very collaborative effort between our team and our customers. We listen, we respond very quickly, and so we can keep the machine going.”
