Dell EMC, NTT help transform Las Vegas into a smart city
How does one build a smart city? The concept is being attempted in Las Vegas with the help of Dell EMC and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT). What will it look like to transform Las Vegas into a smart city?
Howard Elias (pictured, left), president of Dell services, digital and information technology at Dell Technologies Inc., and Jun Sawada (pictured, right), chief executive officer of NTT Security GmbH and chief financial officer of NTT, recently discussed the endeavor and what the ongoing initial proof of concept looks like.
“It’s great because it’s not just about the [internet of things] strategy … but it really is about all of the transformation strategies we have,” Elias said. “If you think about building a smart city, it’s every aspect of digital, IT, workforce and security transformation all coming together into a complete, comprehensive solution.”
Elias and Sawada spoke with John Walls (@JohnWalls21) and Stu Miniman (@stu), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at the Dell Technologies World event in Las Vegas. They discussed making Las Vegas a smart city and the ways they’re implementing technology to do so. (* Disclosure below.)
Making Las Vegas a smart city using IoT
The partnership between Dell EMC and NTT is going to utilize internet of things technologies from the combined companies, according to Elias. “We continue to believe we’re better together, and we’re getting great energy and feedback from our customers and partners,” Elias said.
Many of the smart features Dell and NTT hope to implement in Las Vegas focus on data analysis. “We want to realize the situational awareness of the city of Las Vegas,” Sawada said. They’re doing this by using both reactive analysis to help analyze after situations occur, as well as a proactive analyzing that will be added to the data center to help provide trends or predictions.
The IoT strategy being used is very comprehensive around edge to the distributed core to the cloud, according to Elias. “It’s really based on the Dell technologies around our gateways, our hyper-conversion infrastructure, some of the VMware software foundation capabilities, together with all of the solutions that [Sawada] has talked about,” he said.
