XtremIO X2 is juicing the all-flash array into a copy data management platform
With XtremIO X2, Dell EMC, Dell Technologies Inc.’s infrastructure group, aims to alter customers’ expectations of what an all-flash storage array can do with its enhanced Integrated Copy Data Management, said Arindam Paul, senior consultant of product marketing at Dell EMC, Dell Technologies Inc.’s infrastructure group.
“Copy data management, when done right like we do on our platform, really lets your IT break the chains,” Paul told John Walls (@JohnWalls21), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile live streaming studio, and guest host Keith Townsend (@CTOAdvisor). (* Disclosure below.)
XtremIO X2 offers vertically and horizontally scalable performance, Paul said during Dell EMC World 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The data copy management can create writable copies that are deduplicated and compressed, saving both time and space, he explained.
“You can … create clones of your data — and these clones are perfectly functional clones. You can write to them; you can read to them [like] your production data,” he said.
The initial deduplication and compression of data reduces the need to replicate them when the time comes, Paul added. “The only data you need to put on the wire to replicate is everything after dedupe and compression. And we get about four to one [deduplication, i.e, reduction of redundant copies], so you slash your data transfer by 75 percent,” he said.
In tandem, iCDM technologies result in savings at the target site, savings on the WAN bandwidth and faster replication, Paul stated.
Goodbye Java UI
If all this sounds complicated, the improved Graphical User Interface can present a clear picture of the system and offer intuitive guidance, Paul explained. Eschewing Java for HTML5, this long-anticipated upgrade features menus that walk users through configuration with context-sensitive hints like they’d expect from their iPhones.
“We also have a lot of nice reporting, very beautiful search capabilities that are going to be there for the first time,” he concluded.
