HDP 3.0 is Hortonworks’ latest initiative for modern data architecture
Monday’s announcement by Hortonworks Inc. of a new version for its Hortonworks Data Platform included a number of new features, such as application deployment via containerization, support for deep learning, and enhanced security. One key takeaway from the release of HDP 3.0 is that Hortonworks is intent on playing a major role in what it views as the modern data architecture.
“To be able to bring all types of data under management, manage that in real time through its lifecycle until it becomes at rest, and deploy that across whatever architecture tier is most appropriate — that’s the modern data architecture,” said Rob Bearden (pictured), chief executive officer of Hortonworks Inc.
Bearden spoke with Rebecca Knight (@knightrm) and James Kobielus (@jameskobielus), co-hosts of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the DataWorks Summit in San Jose, California. They discussed new Hortonworks functionality for data insight and tools for enabling the applications ecosystem. (* Disclosure below.)
Leveraging AI and deep learning
The latest release includes graphics processing unit support for executing Hadoop jobs while leveraging artificial intelligence and deep learning tools. The intent is to give data scientists the ability to share GPU access at less cost while running compute-intensive AI applications.
“We have expanded our footprint aggressively,” Bearden said. “We saw the opportunity to actually create more value for our customers by giving them the ability to not wait until they bring data under management to gain an insight.”
Hortonworks is also targeting the applications ecosystem with its latest release. Support for containers running on HDP 3.0 will provide developers with the ability to deploy software more efficiently and speed launching of apps.
“Now that we have this high velocity of data through its entire lifecycle, and one common set of platforms, then we can start enabling the modern applications,” Bearden explained. “What’s next will be the modern applications on top of this that become very predictive and enabled versus procedural, post-event and post-transaction.”
