Dark fiber helps eliminate network choke points | #CCL2015

End users consume seemingly endless amounts of bandwidth day-in and day-out with the demand ever increasing. The challenge of delivering data in a secure and high performance manner is a theme at Console Connect LIVE 2015.
Sunny Kumar, chief commercial officer of SummitIG, LLC, a DC-area startup, sat down with John Furrier and Jeff Frick, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, at Console Connect to talk about how SummitIG, which partnered with Console Inc./IIX Inc., is providing large and small enterprise consumers with access to dark fiber, a seemingly limitless supply of dedicated, customizable high bandwidth infrastructure for the “metro area” and not just the “long haul.”
Lit fiber vs. dark fiber
Most consumers are familiar with purchasing fiber services from a tier-one provider, such as Quest, Level3 Communications, Verizon or AT&T, all of which offer bandwidth on the aptly named “lit fiber.” However, as train tracks are laid and new construction takes place, an infrastructure of unused dark fiber is being built throughout the United States.
Kumar inferred that SummitIG will revolutionize enterprise networking for the DC region, more specifically the Virginia corridor (an area with a high concentration of data centers), by utilizing Console, Inc.’s ecosystem’s provisioning capabilities to distribute dedicated fiber connections. These dedicated dark fiber connections come with a few inherent bonuses.
Security and performance
Kumar explained that for his customers “security is first and foremost” in their list of concerns. The advantage of the dark fiber network is just that – it’s dark. This leaves it unexposed to forward-facing traffic that might otherwise attempt to look at the data. This is due to the dedicated connection’s nature as a known, peer-able route that’s at the control of the enterprise consumer. This is something that providers on lit-fiber just can’t provide and what large enterprises like Google simply install themselves.
The enterprise customers have performance as a “close second” in their list of concerns, according to Kumar. The speed of fiber that was always used for long haul communication would become accessible to businesses at most levels and would go far to eliminate choke points in the network. The untapped bandwidth within the dark fiber network is immense, and SummitIG is well positioned in a key regional marketplace and prepared to make a mark on the networking industry.
