Oracle striving to become #1 Linux vendor | #oow15 by Amber Johnson | Oct 28, 2015 With last year’s September release of Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux, Oracle determined that only one release of a singular product was necessary, because updates every three months can be overwhelming for the market. Oracle recently announced the Kilo release, and OpenStack 2 will be based on Kilo. Wim Coekaerts, SVP of Linux (The Linux Foundation) and visualization at Oracle, divulged that OpenStack 2 will also be released as a Docker container for ease of access. Coekaerts discussed the updates to Oracle’s OpenStack with Stu Miniman and Brian Gracely, cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, at Oracle OpenWorld 2015 in San Francisco. He also commented on how “containers and Docker are becoming popular.” He reported that open-source culture within Oracle is a “development strategy, not a philosophical approach.” If it makes “business sense” to develop the product as open source, that’s how it moves forward. Open source is “not just in my department,” Coekaerts explained, but rather across the company. Currently, Oracle is the number two vendor of Linux. “A lot of the people on my team contribute directly to Linux,” Coekaerts commented. The SVP declared an intention to become number one, stating, “In order to do that, we have to run on everything.” His department is working on making “sure that OpenStack runs on all kinds.” @theCUBE #CiscoUCS
