AI makes the leap from the lab to the board room
Artificial intelligence has been a hot buzzword for a while now, but AI applications are now making the leap from the lab to the boardroom. This change goes beyond dark boxes humming away in a server room. Soon, AI will touch every business application, according to Bob Griffin, chief executive officer of Ayasdi Inc.
“The reality is all applications are eventually going to become intelligent or they’re going to become obsolete,” Griffin told Jeff Frick (@JeffFrick), co-host for theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s mobile livestreaming studio. (* Disclosure below.)
Griffin and Frick discussed AI, security and the shape of data during the recent Chertoff Group Security Series “Security in the Boardroom” event in Palo Alto, California.
New AI tools for future applications
Ayasdi is an artificial intelligence company that builds technologies for enterprise-class AI applications. The company focuses on three areas: detecting financial crimes, such as money laundering; the healthcare market; and government work, mostly around the intelligence community.
Artificial intelligence has reached the stage where it can make a real impact on business problems. For example, in the security world AI can reduce the number of false positives, improving investigations, according to Griffin. As most “hits” in security are false positives, this saves a huge amount of time and money.
The Ayasdi AI system also includes a tool called Envision. This tool allows businesses to rapidly create new AI applications. They can then quickly put those applications into production. Ayasdi likewise provides support in terms of training and assistant personnel for companies that aren’t very technical, Griffin explained.
An interesting part of Ayasdi’s approach involves topological data, that is, studying the shape of data.
“All data has a shape. The challenge historically is most people apply traditional algorithms to data assuming it’s going to be linear,” Griffin said. However, looking at the data’s shape allows companies to ask more intelligent questions of the data and unlock better insight.
