Open-cloud yoga: Maintaining consistency through change at Google
Maintaining consistency in the face of constant change is a challenge for enterprises today. How does an organization choose which technology will be the best for now and for the future when the only constant is that nothing is constant in the world of cloud computing?
“We don’t know where innovation will come from; what will be the next cool thing,” said Chen Goldberg (pictured), director of engineering at Google, during an interview at the Cloud Foundry Summit in Boston, Massachusetts. “We don’t talk about how hard it is to train and change technology, technologies, all during a cultural change within an organization. So, [enterprise] cares about consistency, and this is something that is really in the heart of the thing that we are building.”
Goldberg spoke with Stu Miniman (@stu), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio about the challenges of maintaining microservices and the benefits of having an open hybrid cloud. (* Disclosure below.)
Flexible and portable for consistent evolution
Google has been focused on creating an open cloud, linking private and public clouds, and the company just announced the beta release of the Google managed Service Broker, supporting the Open Service Broker API, which allows developers, independent software vendors, and software as a service vendors to consume services from different platforms.
“If you’re building your application right, you can do those changes,” Goldman said. “When we think about open hybrid cloud, we think about that you can run it anywhere. … You have inter-operability, so you can consume different tools, and you can extend it and innovate on top of it. … You can use a service … maybe your own service … [or] you can use one of the managed services offered by Google.”
Organizations should model ‘being Googley,’ according to Goldman. “To me, being Googley is being nice and being kind, and also being open to more ideas. And that’s what I would hope to see the world moving toward,” she concluded.
