Can Hadoop and Splunk coexist in the Big Data ecosystem? | #BigDataSV
by Marlene Den Bleyker | Mar 31, 2016
In a space where no one company has more than 10 percent of the marketshare, Big Data is looking for answers and service providers are looking to solve business problems. Splunk, Inc. works with Hadoop to provide real-time operational intelligence for the enterprise, and the peaceful coexistence of these two platforms will help usher in the app revolution.
BigDataSV 2016, where theCUBE is celebrating #BigDataWeek, including news and events from the #StrataHadoop conference, is where technology vendors are trying to show how they add value to the Hadoop ecosystem.
Muddu Sudhakar, VP and GM of security at Splunk, sat down with John Furrier (@furrier) and George Gilbert (@ggilbert41), cohosts of theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, to talk about Big Data’s big picture.
The playbook to make top dollar
In response to Furrier’s question about getting value from Hadoop, and the overall tech economy, Sudhakar explained, “The movie now, the playbook here is not about technology in bits and pieces, the next movie here is finding the bigger applications, solving the real problems and the real use-cases. And that is what I see as a big value that customers are willing to pay top dollar.”
Sudhakar continued, “At the end of the day, if you solve a problem and demonstrate the value proposition, customers will come and buy.”
It’s an app economy
Sudhakar noted that Splunk is a machine data fabric on which customers are building apps. He said that this will also play out in the Hadoop ecosystem. He sees Splunk and Hadoop as coexisting.
“We want to coexist with both of these,” he said. Splunk supports the Hadoop platform and Sudhakar believes that from the customer perspective, every customer wants to build apps. He said that Apple has created an app revolution and, very simply, you need a platform to build an app.
Security equation
With all the news surrounding data security, Sudhakar stated, “Encryption is on top of everyone’s mind.” However, the debate on key management continues. “Who will own the key? The vendor or customer?” he asked.
He said it’s not about on and off encryption, and this is what is being hotly debated right now.
