An engine of innovation: AWS operates in a customer-centric culture | #reinvent
by Marlene Den Bleyker | Oct 8, 2015
In his keynote speech during Amazon re:Invent 2015, Andy Jassy, senior VP, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), proved he is a leader, an innovator and a family man, yet the humble senior vice president was simply excited because his team could not wait to tell customers about the opportunities that AWS is bringing to the cloud ecosystem.
Jassy joined host John Furrier, cohost on theCUBE, from the SiliconANGLE Media team, to discuss the mindset of AWS and what drives the company to be an engine of innovation.
Not disruptive, customer-centric
When asked about AWS disrupting the industry, Jassy replied, “We are not trying to be disruptive, we are trying to give the customer what they want.” He explained that currently there are 50 services and many features available through the AWS, and the technology infrastructure platform offers customers the ability to build upon it.
Jassy gives credit to the leadership at Amazon for its customer-centric culture. “We want to give businesses what they need to be successful, and our leadership is good at executing on customer feedback,” he said.
“When we started AWS, we saw a strong tech company that needed to move more quickly to meet the demand,” Jassy stated. However, that company never internalized how constrained developers were over the years and how difficult it was for the enterprise to move quickly, which he believes led to them abandoning innovation. He went on to say, “When you support them, it opens up all the ideas they can be successful.”
Competitive strategy
The goal at AWS is to provide value for customers so they can make money and provide opportunity for experimentation.
“There are so many opportunities for companies of all sizes to build on our platform, and we are astounded by what our partners are doing.” Jassy stated. The company built its database product with the cloud in mind in order to make the cost structure more affordable.
AWS IoT
Jassy stated that most of the big IoT apps are built on top of AWS. He indicated that the company always believed it was more challenging for developers to connect to AWS because it did not have tools with sophisticated capabilities that the new AWS IoT product will provide.
Jassy summed up by saying, “Everything we do is about the customer and customer experience.” That philosophy is definitely working for Amazon.
