Eli Lubitch, Beamr, at AWS Re:Invent 2013 2013 with John Furrier and Dave Vellante
Broadcasting live from the AWS re: Invent 2013 conference in Las Vegas, Wikibon's co-Founder Dave Vellante and SiliconANGLE's Founder John Furrier welcomed Eli Lubitch, Beamr's President, who talked about quality driven video optimization processes and enhancing user experience.
"Media is a very hot tech market right now," noted Furrier, who prompted Lubitch to elaborate on his business and field of expertise. "Our contribution is with media optimization. We have invented a quality measurement algorithm that we can attach to standard block-base encoders -- like JPG, H264 or H265. By doing so we can drive the encoder frame by frame to the smallest file-size possible before introducing any effect visible to the human eye," boasted Lubitch. "We can optimize a 1080p video by an average of 50 percent or more without compromising the quality; we'll retain the original quality and resolution."
Beamr Video promises to cut the bitrate of your videos by 50 percent without affecting their quality. "That's basically our invention and you'll enjoy an enhanced user experience. If you reduce the file-size of a photo by 60 percent, you can accelerate the page upload time and make it 3 times faster. User experience is the number one contribution," said Lubitch. This is a Linux software application that can be deployed both on-premise and in the cloud.
The cloud dynamic and the practical applications
"Obviously the AWS is the perfect platform for us because it is scalable. Our process is computational intensive. Processing time for an hour long 720p file will take 7 hours of optimization. We have a splicer that allows you to splice the file and work in parallel," explained Lubitch. "Prior to AWS, we had a very simple Linux executable."
Beamr Video allows you to upgrade the quality of the videos you deliver and can also be used to reduce your bandwidth requirements, while maintaining the full quality of the original videos. The quality measure algorithm used in the optimization process ensures that the perceptual quality of the original videos is preserved, even though the bitrate is significantly decreased.
"You can use the technology to enhance the user experience. Every smartphone today is a full 1080p device. Why would you deliver 360p to a 1080p device? Our message is rich media. If your business is social network, e-commerce, publishing or entertainment, the quality of the visual counts. You can deliver the best quality possible to any destination: mobile, landline, fiber, DSL," added Lubitch.
With Beamr Video the quality of videos can be upgraded from SD to HD for instance, enhancing the viewing experience for your fixed and mobile users without increasing the bitrate.
"Beamr was founded in 2009, but for three years we were involved only in scientific research. We started doing business about 18 months ago. So, despite being four years old, we are the industry's best kept secret," concluded Lubitch.
