With all-remote, software-first business models, digital end-user experience is everything. Consumers will flock to providers who keep the keenest watch on their experience, fix glitches quickly — or, even better, prevent them.
Some are finding the means to do these things in the new class of observability tools for cloud applications.
“Brand loyalty really is that digital experience,” said Steven Long (pictured, right), regional chief technology officer of AppDynamics LLC, noting the how COVID-19 has changed product and service delivery.
Long and Ron Teeter (pictured, left), vice president of engineering at Jobvite Inc., spoke with John Furrier, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed why companies must now focus on user experience more than ever and how observability tools can help. (* Disclosure below.)

AppDynamics found, through research published in its “Agents of Transformation” report, that for 95% of surveyed customers, priorities have shifted, with digital experience moving front and center. Cloud adoption can help by enabling greater speed and agility. But to respond rapidly to what users experience moment by moment, businesses need deep visibility into production via things like distributed tracing and code-level monitoring, according to Long.
Jobvite, a talent-acquisition platform, has tweaked its offerings to accommodate conditions brought on by the pandemic. For example, it has introduced an intelligent messaging system to enable rich conversations between hiring managers and candidates via mobile device.
“I can’t assume that someone has a browser and an email client anymore,” Teeter said.
Jobvite has upgraded its infrastructure to enable greater agility among other things. When infrastructure and applications are virtual and ephemeral, it’s more difficult to envision how altering them will impact the whole system, let alone capacity planning and budgeting, according to Teeter. Jobvite uses AppDynamics Deep Code Insights observability and debugging software. This lets it measure and test changes in development and extrapolate them to production by scaling the load.
“In areas were you’ve taken I/O and network out of the equation, that kind of extrapolation works very well,” Teeter explained.
The time to resolve the impact of a change on user experience and the organization can go from hours or days to minutes.
“That is tremendous when people understand what it can do for them,” Teeter concluded.
