An app a day: Amazon Honeycode team embraces low-code/no-code movement along with AWS customers

Amazon Honeycode was only launched in beta form six months ago, but its own team members have rapidly embraced the promise of a fully managed service that allows customers to build powerful mobile and web applications without the need for any programming.
“Among the Honeycode team itself, we use it for managing all of our internal processes,” said Meera Vaidyanathan (pictured), product leader for Amazon Honeycode at Amazon Web Services Inc. “Because we’re all so distributed these days, we seem to be spinning up an app on practically a daily basis. It’s given rise to a lot of new ideas and ways in which we’re able to work together collaboratively.”
Vaidyanathan spoke with Rebecca Knight, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed new features and templates recently introduced for Amazon Honeycode and how the tool has added value for AWS customers. (* Disclosure below.)
Integration with Salesforce
AWS recently announced new enhancements for the app builder. These include integrations with Zapier and Amazon AppFlow to set up workflows between major services such as Salesforce and single sign-on with major identity providers such as Okta Inc. and Google LLC.
AWS has also added templates for the Honeycode library, including the ability to run meetings virtually, generate instant polls, deploy a collaborative brainstorming template, and provide a method for applicant tracking, according to Vaidyanathan.
“We’re continually adding new features, so every user doesn’t have to think like a user experience designer,” Vaidyanathan said. “We’re thinking about all the business use cases, trying to find ways to help customers make the information pop better in their app so they deliver more value in businesses.”
In addition to the use of Honeycode internally, AWS has also seen external interest and use as well.
“The very first app that a customer shared with us was a COVID tracking tool for a childcare center in New Hampshire,” Vaidyanathan said. “Parents had been standing in line and waiting to fill out a form at the entry point. This customer built an app over a weekend, deployed it, and was able to reduce the drop off time to only minutes.”
