Cisco, AWS create fluid flow of data across the hybrid cloudverse
Hybrid and multicloud computing environments are becoming commonplace in almost every industry, from healthcare to horticulture and academia to the Secret Service. As adoption increases, consumers and enterprise alike are demanding software applications that allow fluid access to the data resources stored and deployed in the cloud. Fueling this accessibility is the convergence of software development and information technology operations, known as DevOps.
“Companies have to be able to move fast in delivering incredible experiences to their customers and their employees in the form of apps, and DevOps is the way to do that,” said Kip Compton (pictured, right), senior vice president of cloud platform and solutions at Cisco Systems Inc.
Compton and Dave Cope (pictured, left), senior director of market development, CloudCenter, at Cisco, spoke with John Furrier (@furrier), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, and guest host Lauren Cooney (@lcooney), founder and chief executive officer of Spark Labs Consulting LLC, during AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas. They discussed how Cisco helps its customers develop secure, effective hybrid cloud management strategies. (* Disclosure below.)
Cisco, AWS partner for better data sources in hybrid world
The recently announced Cisco Hybrid Solution for Kubernetes on AWS is the result of a collaboration between Cisco and Amazon Web Systems Inc. to facilitate management of Kubernetes-based applications for DevOps engineers.
“We bring a fully automated infrastructure on-prem that matches up very well with fully automated infrastructures like AWS and enables these hybrid-use cases and DevOps in a hybrid model,” Compton said.
With hybrid emerging as the most practical model for most businesses to adopt, interest in the solution has been high. A joint study by Cisco and IDC Research Inc. on cloud maturity found that “only 14 percent of enterprises had an optimized cloud strategy,” Compton stated. “So it’s an incredibly fertile area for us to help our customers really take advantage of their on-prem assets — and also multiple clouds in the multicloud.”
Security is an integral part of the new solution, with Cisco’s Stealthwatch Cloud monitoring events both on-prem and across the Amazon Elastic Container Service environment. “One of the things that’s different about cloud for us is that every part of Cisco is involved in our cloud strategy,” Compton said. “So we’re very much stitching security into everything we do.”
