Edge-to-AI platform brings distributed data on home to analysts
In analytics, the rule is that the larger the data set, the sharper the insights. But distributed IT, hybrid environments, and internet of things edge devices divide data into disparate pockets. It can be challenging for companies to haul it all in for holistic analytics.
“If you’re a real data scientist, you want to have as much data as you can, so your models can run more accurately,” said Ashley Traver (pictured), big data evangelist at Cloudera Inc. Machine learning applies logic on top of large data sets to derive insights. The ability to apply machine-learning methods to very large data sets is quite complicated, Traver added.
Part of the difficulty is in bringing all necessary data together in one place. To this end, Cloudera recently completed a collaborative merger with Hortonworks Inc., makers of a big-data management software. The two are creating an Enterprise Data Cloud that enables users to bring all their data together on a single platform.
Traver spoke with Lisa Martin (@LisaMartinTV), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the ACG Silicon Valley GROW! Awards 2019 in Mountain View, California. They discussed the merger and how the companies are addressing big-data complexities (see the full interview with transcript here). (* Disclosure below.)
Mergers and analytics
The former rivals joined forces to form an end-to-end big-data management offering. The goal is to make practical big-data analysis easier for customers.
“We call it an edge-to-AI solution. We’re really one of the only companies right now in the world who have the ability to do that in a comprehensive manner,” Traver said. This enables analysts to bring data from all sources into one place. That results in improved models, better insights, and ultimately more value to companies and their customers, he added.
They can deliver the solution on-premises, in a public cloud, or in a hybrid-cloud environment. “So it gives you the ultimate flexibility, and the merger has allowed us to really accomplish that for our customers,” Tarver concluded.
