Urging Silicon Valley to consider all aspects of modern, green tech

With the growing concern for climate change around the globe, information technology consultant Wipro Ltd has turned attention to societal issues as they relate to the technology industry. The company focuses on the growth and energy of technology, like all companies in Silicon Valley, according to Anita Ganti (pictured), senior vice president and global head of product engineering services at Wipro. But introducing a new spin on the Valley’s seemingly unstoppable growth, Ganti is urging the famed tech hub to factor in environmental consciousness.
“With all the technology that we have access to, it seems such a shame that we are not paying attention to real-world problems, larger world problems,” Ganti said. “There’s a lot of harm that some aspects of technology have cost our planet.”
Ganti spoke with Jeff Frick (@JeffFrick), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, during the ACGSV 14th Annual GROW! Awards in Mountain View, California. They discussed the importance of individuals in the tech field contributing to the world’s social issues. (* Disclosure below.)
Doing tech for good
The desire for good within the tech industry does not have to be done solely by corporations, Ganti stressed. “We can do that as engineers who are working just in our day-to-day lives,” she said. How? By keeping the the planet in mind, not just the first-world issues focused on by corporations.
Ganti isn’t suggesting a complete separation from the business end of companies. “[We can] look for for-profit avenues to enable technology but then keep the impact on our planet in mind,” she stated.
While corporate allocation for social good is ideal, Ganti argued that it isn’t necessary. In fact, she pushed for individuals within the industry to “make it a part of [their] mission” and take new technologies to different markets.
“It’s not just about making the product, but then taking the product you’ve made and implementing it in various use cases that really make a change come about in the world,” she concluded.
