SD-WAN is the on-ramp to a multicloud highway.
As the reality of a multicloud world grows, every enterprise is going have to deal with a complex computing network designed to utilize new services, place data in more ideal places, and assure security against a broadening attack plane. Software-defined wide area networking is an established technology that’s been talked about for quite some time as one avenue to reducing the complexities underlying the process of modernization — so how can a company utilize SD-WAN to make their journey to multicloud simpler?
“I think about SD-WAN as sort of the on-ramp to the highway of the cloud and all the cloud can bring to that,” said Jeff Brown (pictured), chief executive officer of Open Systems AG. “It’s all moving to the cloud … [and] your network has to move that direction as well — and SD-WAN is one of the key components of that.”
Brown spoke with Peter Burris (@plburris), host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s mobile livestreaming studio, at theCUBE’s studio in Palo Alto, California. They discussed multicloud and Open System’s SD-WAN solutions (see the full interview with transcript here). (* Disclosure below.)
Open System brings SD-WAN platform for multicloud solutions
Multicloud is clearly the direction that the world is going, and Open Systems sees their SD-WAN as a solution for the next generation of networking architecture. Many of their customers are already working across multiple clouds, according to Brown. Open Systems, which has been around for 15 years, began tackling these issues for some time, creating a secure SD-WAN platform to help enable multicloud solutions because they believe a company will have huge financial benefit to moving their network onto the cloud.
“As a service company, we get to have the luxury of controlling the entire environment,” Brown explained. “A lot of places … have mixed environments, so nothing quite works the way it should together. And I think our benefit … is the fact that we’ve prodded through a lot of this already.”
A CIO should spend time trying to figure out what the strategic direction should be for his or her company in general rather than getting bogged down in operational details, according to Brown. An end-to-end SD-WAN solution can take all the guesswork out of it for them.
“They don’t have to worry about technology decisions that may or may not be right or staying state-of-the-art along the way and handling all those other services,” Brown concluded.
