Larry Pesce, a veteran in cybersecurity, discusses artificial intelligence and its transformative impact at RSAC 2025.
In this episode of theCUBE, Dave Vellante sits down with Larry Pesce, a multifaceted cybersecurity expert affiliated with Finite State, a leading cybersecurity firm. Pesce's experience spans decades, covering penetration testing, Internet of Things (IoT) security and thought leadership. The discussion takes place at the prestigious RSAC 2025 event, bringing attention to emerging trends and tools, particularly artificial intelligence, that are shaping the industry.
Pesce, known for their extensive background in penetration testing and the IoT space, shares insights on the integration of AI in cybersecurity. They talk about their role with Finite State and collaborations with CyberRisk Alliance on media and technology projects. Hosted by Dave Vellante from theCUBE Research, the session sheds light on Pesce's experiences, including observations at RSAC over the years.
The conversation highlights AI's growing presence, emphasizing its role as a force multiplier. According to Pesce, companies such as Finite State leverage AI to enhance efficiency significantly, completing up to 80% of the workload, yet leaving room for human oversight. The discussion also touches on concerns related to AI, from job impacts to ethical considerations, and compares it with traditional sources such as Wikipedia.

>> Hi, everybody. Welcome to theCUBE at Sundown. This is Dave Vellante. And we're wrapping up. We're getting thrown out of this room. I'm here with... Who are you?
Larry Pesce
>> Larry Pesce.
Dave Vellante
>> Larry Pesce. Nice to meet you.
Larry Pesce
>> Dave, nice to meet you.
Dave Vellante
>> How are you doing, man?
Larry Pesce
>> We are neighbors over in Broadcast Alley. So I do some work with CyberRisk Alliance for Paul's Security Weekly.
Dave Vellante
>> Oh, very cool. So are you an analyst? A journalist? An influencer? A technologist? All of the above?
Larry Pesce
>> All of the above.
Dave Vellante
>> Great.
Larry Pesce
>> All of the above. Yeah, so I've spent a lot of-
Dave Vellante
>> So tell me your story.
Larry Pesce
>> So I spent 15, almost 20 years doing pen testing, a lot of that in the IoT space, and then started to move into some thought leadership and some policy work at Finite State, and we've done that podcast from a technologist side and a media side for close to 20 years. We're going into year number 20 now. So a little bit of everything.
Dave Vellante
>> So how many RSAs have you been to? RSAC, sorry. RSAC, just one. How many RSAs?
Larry Pesce
>> Yeah. This is actually my fourth. After all those years, this is only my fourth. And one of them was many years ago. This is third year in a row.
Dave Vellante
>> How has it changed? What are your observations?
Larry Pesce
>> There's been a lot of ancillary type of activities that have been added, like the sandbox and the new interventions type of stuff, that I've seen from the recent three years as to some of the previous years.
Dave Vellante
>> And it's only day one, but what are you hearing? What's the conversation like over in Broadcast Alley?
Larry Pesce
>> It's been good. I mean-
Dave Vellante
>> What's the big trends?
Larry Pesce
>> AI, of course. I mean, everybody-
Dave Vellante
>> What about AI though?
Larry Pesce
>> I think if you don't have AI in your product, you're probably missing out. We use AI at Finite State. We're encouraged to use AI largely because it is such a force multiplier. You get 80% of your work done with AI, and sure, you're going to have to still spend some time reviewing either code, or language, or art, you name it, but to get 80% of your work done and be more efficient, that's amazing.
Dave Vellante
>> I mean, I don't know if the last three years are any indication, but I mean, I touched AI when AI was embedded in the product, like we had some AI machine learning in our products and, okay, I used them, but now I use AI every day many, many times a day.
Larry Pesce
>> Absolutely.
Dave Vellante
>> And I was talking to somebody the other day. They were saying, "Well, but it's going to affect jobs," and I'm like, "Well, I don't know if these first three years are any indication, but all I know is I got way more to do now because of AI. It's like I can write so much more, I can do so much more, I can process so many more emails. I'm just getting swamped."
Larry Pesce
>> You're doing more, but you're being more efficient at it at the same time.
Dave Vellante
>> But I've got this backlog of stuff now. I mean, I take a transcript, I run it through AI, and it's like, wow, now I've got like 10 blogs that I could write about these video interviews that we do. And of course you got to go edit them. I'm not just going to publish it without putting my fingerprints on it. I suppose I could do that, but it's not as good.
Larry Pesce
>> No, it's not. I know.
Dave Vellante
>> Will the AI be as good someday?
Larry Pesce
>> I don't know if it'll be as good. I think we're still going to be at that 80 to 90% of still having to do some review. And you wouldn't want, to take from Back to the Future, you wouldn't want to turn your homework into someone else's handwriting, right? So-
Dave Vellante
>> Exactly....
Larry Pesce
>> you've always got to do the review.
Dave Vellante
>> I mean, ethically you wouldn't want to do that.
Larry Pesce
>> Right, right.
Dave Vellante
>> But it's probably happening all over the place.
Larry Pesce
>> Yep, absolutely.
Dave Vellante
>> Okay. And there's probably AI to tell if it's AI.
Larry Pesce
>> Oh, definitely, definitely. So in the schools, they're using AI to determine whether the students wrote their papers with AI.
Dave Vellante
>> You know, it's funny, maybe probably 20 years ago it was a finger wagging about, "Don't use Wikipedia."
Larry Pesce
>> Yes, yes. I still get that finger wagging, like, "Wikipedia is not a source of truth because anybody can edit it."
Dave Vellante
>> Wikipedia is pretty good though.
Larry Pesce
>> I agree, I agree, and they-
Dave Vellante
>> Especially for math and science. I found it's quite good for math and science.
Larry Pesce
>> Absolutely, absolutely. Because folks don't mess with that stuff. They mess with everything else.
Dave Vellante
>> Sometimes it's better than AI for math and science.
Larry Pesce
>> Well, now they just need to train AI with Wikipedia and math and science. Not saying that they don't. They probably do. So-
Dave Vellante
>> All right, so we're getting the high sign. We got to go. Thanks so much for coming on theCUBE.
Larry Pesce
>> Thank you, sir.
Dave Vellante
>> It was a pleasure to meet you.
Larry Pesce
>> Thanks you, sir.
Dave Vellante
>> All right, that wraps it up here for theCUBE at Sundown here at RSAC, day one with OpenPolicy, NYSC Wired, and theCUBE. Thanks for watching. And Anishin as well. We'll see you tomorrow. Thanks for watching.
