In this interview from the GSA Awards Celebration, Rong Pan, corporate vice president at AMD and recipient of the GSA Women of Influence Award, joins theCUBE’s John Furrier to reflect on what the recognition means for her and for the broader semiconductor community. Pan shares how AI is reigniting interest in electrical and computer engineering, making semiconductors “fashionable again” as next-generation workloads drive demand for advanced infrastructure. She also highlights her work at AMD on industry collaboration around the Ultra Ethernet Consortium, whic...Read more

What was the experience of winning the Women of Influence Award at the GSA Awards for the recipient?add
>> Welcome back. I'm John Furrier, host of theCUBE. We are at the GSA Awards. The award winners are coming offstage. Rong Pan here with AMD. She won the Women of Influence Award. Congratulations.
Rong Pan
>> Thank you.
John Furrier
>> This is a prestigious award. What a great event. It's heavy. I mean, it's a good paperweight, but it's a beautiful award. Congratulations. What's it like up there in front of all your peers?
Rong Pan
>> Well, it's exciting and a bit overwhelming. It's my first time attending the GSA Dinners Award, but I'm excited and appreciate GSA for recognize me. Yeah.
John Furrier
>> Yeah. One of the things that we've been talking about on theCUBE is the impact of women in tech, of course, in semiconductors. We had an event in Palo Alto. Silicon designers, assembly, I mean, there is a huge growth of women coming in, and there's still more coming. And there's a lot of young women out there because the science has gotten so incredible.
Rong Pan
>> Yes.
John Furrier
>> Are there fields out there that you see that kind of are adjacent to semiconductor? Because AI is opening up a lot more aperture to the technology.
Rong Pan
>> Yes, because it's great to see that semiconductor is fashionable again. Yeah, because-
John Furrier
>> We've always loved it, so we're biased.
Rong Pan
>> At one point, it's a software-defined networking or software, but it's great that AI opened up, bring back semiconductor again. And I heard also in the schools, the electrical engineering or computer engineering, the study has become really hot topic again. It's really great to see that.
John Furrier
>> Yeah. And you're seeing more people talk about robots, whether it's autonomous cars, robotics. The field is more diverse than ever before.
Rong Pan
>> Yes. And then exciting to see that more and more women are coming into the field. Yes.
John Furrier
>> Absolutely. What's the most exciting thing this year for you? Obviously the award here is a great end of the year for the industry, but for you personally, what's been the big highlight for you?
Rong Pan
>> Since I joined AMD, I've been working in industry collaboration for extending the ethernet for the AI era called Ultra Ethernet Consortium. And in the middle of this year, we just published the first spec of ultra ethernet, so that's one highlight of this year's project that was really exciting to see that industry coming together and created something that's so great.
John Furrier
>> I love the ethernet because it was supposed to be dead 20 years ago. It just keeps getting better and better. It's powering all the large-scale clusters. Great work.
Rong Pan
>> Yes. Yes.
John Furrier
>> Great work. What's it like for you to get this award? What's it feel like?
Rong Pan
>> I really am excited for the recognition. Thank you, GSA, for promoting and championing women leaders. And this trophy really feels like it's a relay torch for me, not only that I will finish my leg strong, but I will pass on to the next generation of leaders in semiconductors.
John Furrier
>> Congratulations, and thank you so much for stopping by our post-award program.
Rong Pan
>> Thank you.
John Furrier
>> Congratulations.
Rong Pan
>> Thank you.
John Furrier
>> I'm John Furrier. Post-awards are happening. They're coming off the stage. Furious pace. We got it covered. Thanks for watching.
