>> Welcome back, consumer electronics nerds. We're here for another exciting demo and explanation with Dell's CES 2025 preview. This one I'm perhaps most excited about because there's a lot of buzz about the AI PC, folks talking about how we've officially entered the AI PC era, but what is an AI PC really like to use and to interact with? I couldn't think of anyone better than Tom to give me a little demo.

>> Welcome.

>> Tom, thanks so much for coming to hang out.

Tom Tobul

>> Thank you. Welcome.

Savannah Peterson

>> What makes this particular computer so premium, so pro, and so awesome for the AI PC world?

Tom Tobul

>> Well, I think there's a couple things. First off, when we talk about the commercial tenants that our customers are looking for, you think about security, reliability, and then also durability. And so we spent a tremendous amount of time working on our hinge structure.

Savannah Peterson

>> This is alone must have been some sort of .

Tom Tobul

>> This is 96% greater rigidity than the prior generation. So after you open and close this 20,000 times over the course of a five year life cycle, when you're sitting on the plane, you still have touch capability with the hinge structure that you want. It doesn't start getting all floppy on you.

Savannah Peterson

>> Yeah, exactly.

Tom Tobul

>> Along with PPM capability, again, all of the durability that we build into our devices as customers go through their daily life, dropping it into their backpack, maybe dropping it at the airport. You can carry this with you for four or five years successfully and it'll be your trusted companion. And again, with Intel's new Lunar Lake processors, up to 20 hours of battery life.

Savannah Peterson

>> That is so impressive. It's honestly, we all work long days. Hopefully you're not working 20 hour days, but sometimes it happens, and I was thinking about this even on the plane yesterday, trying to conserve power. A lot of devices, particularly that are doing complex computing or AI at the edge, like these devices are poised to do and already rolling out to do, you're not getting the battery life and it's really disappointing if you're super excited and all of a sudden-

Tom Tobul

>> Now you don't need to be hugging the wall looking for an outlet. You have up to 20 hours of battery life.

Savannah Peterson

>> You can be out in the field, you can be where you are. We talk a lot about meeting the data where it is when it comes to AI PCs. You're also meeting the user wherever they are, in whatever environment they're in. Curious about the commitment to durability. I mean, I love that it's durable and that matter. I'm a clumsy person, so even if I'm not outdoors, I think this is really lovely. What were some of the use cases you had in mind when you chose to craft a machine that was so durable?

Tom Tobul

>> Well, you heard Sam and Michael talking about it this morning. We spend a lot of time with our users, and we spend a lot of time with them a day in the life. So tell us how you use your devices and are you traveling? Maybe you're a college professor and you're in and out of the bag, three, four times, going to class, back and forth. And so we tailor our rigidity, shock, and vibe specs to the use cases that we get from our interactions with our customers. And so it allows us to build test cases based on the way that we know users are going to use our device on a daily basis, day in and day out. And as you mentioned, it might not be 20 hour days, but it might be five days a week, might be seven days a week. And you think about the number of times you open your device, put your device in your bag, maybe drop it or set it down roughly on a table. Those are the types of experiences that we build our shock and vibe tests for our systems to endure. And then a lot of our customers are keeping their devices for longer and longer because they're a significant investment. And so we build our devices to last through that four or five year life cycle.

Savannah Peterson

>> I think that's a really nice thing to say. I feel like hardware as a whole, not speaking to Dell, but just as an industry, was trying to get us on this every year renewal track. I mean, I'm specifically thinking about cell phones as an edge device.

Tom Tobul

>> Not that that would be bad.

Savannah Peterson

>> No, I mean, of course. We all love making money and as long as it's that wonderful recycled magnesium that you have there, we know that it's sustainable. However, I love hearing this: "Oh, for four or five years, this is going to be fine." I know there's a commitment to modularity as well as the sustainable design. You're not trying to get people to upgrade their computer so they can have the next flashy thing in two or three years. You're telling people to upgrade their computer so they can be competent, creative, and participant in the next four to five years.

Tom Tobul

>> That's right.

Savannah Peterson

>> And you'll be thinking about what device will serve them in the future. Speaking to me as a human and not just as a fabulous Dell leader, what excites you most about what you think people might use these devices for as they trickle into the wild?

Tom Tobul

>> Oh, look, I think the opportunities are endless. When we were speaking earlier about creators and designers and engineers, and not only having the AI processing capability but all day compute capability and you end up with a device that's durable enough and lightweight enough to take with you everywhere you go.

Savannah Peterson

>> I really can't believe how lightweight it is. And I say this with absolute love to Dell. You're not known for making the lightest weight devices. And this is a little big for my pocket, but it's the type of thing where I wouldn't even notice that this was my hand.

Tom Tobul

>> And that's the beauty of it. And so you think about-

Savannah Peterson

>> It's so cool, there's so much compute in there too....

Tom Tobul

>> all of the creative ideas that you have in any instance that you're in, and you want to make sure you have your device with you so that you can act on that. Now you can take this device with you wherever you go and go create, go invent, go engineer and design. I think the opportunities are endless.

Savannah Peterson

>> All right. I've got just a couple final questions for you, Tom. When we're hanging out at Dell Tech World, we're at CES now, we're at Dell Tech World in May. What do you hope to be able to say then that you can't yet say today?

Tom Tobul

>> I'd really like to be able to talk to you about specific experiences that we're hearing from customers on how they're using their AI PCs and specifically this generation, and frankly, see them in the field. See the scientists, see the engineers, see the designers and the creators using our devices and coming back and sharing with us exactly how it helped transform speed their time to decision or time to end result, whatever that end result might be, so that the other folks who are looking for inspiration on, would that device help me? Are there either performance improvements or AI improvements that would help me in what I want to do? And they'll be able to see somebody through the lens of them themselves and their creativity with our devices. I'd love to be able to talk to you about that in May.

Savannah Peterson

>> Well, I can't wait to tell all of those stories with you, Tom. I think there will be a lot that happens over the next five months. That is very exciting. What do you wish people knew about AI PCs? Because I feel like there's a lot of hype, but if you were to ask a general consumer cruising down the street here in Manhattan what they might think about an AI PC, I'm not sure they would know what to do with it or about it and what that really meant. So what do you wish people knew about these devices that we can help elevate for you?

Tom Tobul

>> I think when people hear AI PC, I think they get turned off and I think they shut down because they think it's going to be a really deep conversation.

Savannah Peterson

>> Or complex. I think they think the device, the hardware, is going to be complex.

Tom Tobul

>> That's right. And here's the-

Savannah Peterson

>> Or super, super, super expensive.

Tom Tobul

>> Here's the upside. They're not super, super expensive. And the upside from my perspective is it could be really, really complex and we can get in and talk about how you can do better genome decoding with an AI PC. Doesn't have to be that. We can talk about how it can improve your daily transcription of emails or documents or speed time to video editing or audio-

Savannah Peterson

>> I was going to say or story-boarding your next film.

Tom Tobul

>> Absolutely. So in its simplest terms, what do you do today with your PC? An AI PC will help you do it faster, with better results than you're doing it today. That's as simple as it gets.

>> Bingo. I love it, Tom. Well, thank you so much for taking the time today.
